BBS Survey reveals half of women in Bangladesh still outside internet services

BBS survey shows that 53.4 percent people use the internet. Among them, 56.6 percent are men and 50.2 percent women.

In the era of modern information technology, half of the country’s women still remain outside internet services, according to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). A survey by the agency shows that 53.4 percent people use the internet. Among them, 56.6 percent are men and 50.2 percent women. Additionally, 46.6 percent people are still reluctant to use the internet due to high costs.

BBS published the survey on Thursday at its conference room in Agargaon in the capital. It reveals the number of mobile and internet users in the country, along with disparities between urban and rural areas and differences in usage between men and women.

The survey highlights a significant gap in internet usage between urban and rural areas. While 75.7 percent of people in urban areas use the internet, the figure stands at only 43.6 percent in rural areas. This results in a gap of 32.1 percentage points, posing a major challenge for digital inclusion in the country.

Despite the widespread use of mobile phones, personal ownership still lags behind. While 88.4 percent of people use mobile phones, only 64.4 percent own one. Meanwhile, computer usage remains limited at just 11.3 percent.

A household-level analysis shows there are notable regional disparities in access to internet and technology. Internet usage is highest in Dhaka, while Panchagarh has the lowest rate. Similarly, Dhaka leads in computer usage, whereas Thakurgaon lags behind.

In terms of internet usage purposes, searching for government job-related information ranks highest, with 64.4 percent of users engaging in such searches over the past three months. Additionally, 49.8 percent searched for sports-related information. Online shopping remains relatively low, with only 11.6 percent of users utilising such services.

Regarding digital skills, users mostly engage in basic activities. Copy-paste skills are present among 84.4 percent of users, making it the most common digital activity. However, more advanced digital skills remain limited.

The survey also reveals some positive aspects of cybersecurity awareness. About 78.5 percent of users reported that they were able to take necessary action when facing cyberattacks. However, risks remain significant, with 50.5 percent identifying viruses and malware as the biggest threats in internet usage.

Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary Aleya Akter attended the survey publication event as the chief guest. BBS Director General Mohammad Farhad Siddique and other project officials were also present.
