Aminul Islam Bulbul, the former captain of the Bangladesh Cricket Team, has been elected as the new President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Today (May 30), he was nominated by the National Sports Council (NSC) as a director of the BCB. Following this, the board directors elected him as president. Bulbul will replace the recently removed Faruque Ahmed as the head of the cricket governing body.
Additionally, Nazmul Abedin Fahim has been named Senior Vice President of the BCB, while Fahim Sinha has been appointed Vice President.
The decision to remove Faruque Ahmed from the presidency was finalized late Thursday night (May 29) with the cancellation of his nomination as director. On the same night, the NSC moved forward to make former national player Aminul Islam Bulbul the next BCB president by approving him as an NSC-nominated councilor.
This afternoon, the BCB board officially elected Aminul Islam as the new President, announcing him as a board director nominated by the NSC before his election.
Before Faruque Ahmed’s nomination as director was canceled late Thursday, the NSC had already sent Bulbul’s councilor nomination letter to the BCB. The directors approved his councilorship in an online meeting that night.
Faruque Ahmed faced severe criticism following mismanagement of the recent Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) event, irregularities in fund transfers, and escalating controversies. Additionally, the national team’s poor performance added to the pressure. Eight BCB directors sent a letter to the NSC accusing Faruque of several issues, including franchise nominations without proper vetting and failure to assign tasks to BCB-listed event management companies.
Following this, the government planned to remove Faruque Ahmed and began discussions around former captain Aminul Islam Bulbul as his replacement.
To become president, Aminul Islam Bulbul had to first become an NSC councilor and then a director. Among NSC’s five council members, two are BCB directors. To appoint Aminul as a councilor, the NSC replaced former councilor Habibur Rahman. Today, after his appointment as director, Aminul was elected as President.
