Bangladesh beat Australia by nine wickets in Darwin to secure their first Test victory on Australian soil, completing the match inside four days after being set only 57 to win.

Australia were bowled out for 198 in their first innings as Hasan Mahmud took six wickets. Steve Smith was the only Australian batter to offer significant resistance before Bangladesh replied with 426, built around Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto’s 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s 65, giving the visitors a 228-run lead.

Miraz then claimed five wickets as Australia were dismissed for 284 in their second innings despite 104 from Cameron Green. That left Australia just 56 ahead and handed Bangladesh a target of 57.

Tanzid fell without scoring at the start of the chase, but Shadman Islam was unbeaten on 25 and Mominul Haque was not out on 30 as Bangladesh completed the win.

Miraz also became the second Bangladesh player to complete the double of 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in the World Test Championship.

The result sparked chants of “Bangladesh, Bangladesh” from the gallery, with expatriate supporters in Darwin celebrating the historic victory. Bangladesh’s players embraced outside the dressing room, while silence descended over the Australian camp from the dressing room to the press box.
