Lionel Messi came off the bench to score a late free-kick and become the first player to find the net in seven consecutive World Cup finals matches, sealing Argentina’s 3-1 victory over Jordan in Dallas and a place in the last 32.
Giovani Lo Celso curled in a free-kick to give the champions the lead in the 19th minute and Lautaro Martínez converted a penalty 12 minutes later. Musa Al-Taamari pulled a goal back for already-eliminated Jordan in the 55th minute before Messi struck in the 80th.
The goal broke the record of six straight World Cup scoring matches shared by France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho.
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni made nine changes to the side that beat Austria but the team lost none of their dominance. Argentina will face Cape Verde in the round of 32.
