Taijul becomes Bangladesh’s top Test wicket-taker

The left-arm spinner surpassed Shakib Al Hasan after claiming his 247th dismissal during the second Test against Ireland in Dhaka.

Taijul Islam has set a new benchmark for Bangladesh cricket, overtaking Shakib Al Hasan to become the country’s highest wicket-taker in Test matches. The milestone came on Sunday (November 22) in Dhaka during Ireland’s second innings in the final Test of the two-match series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.

The left-arm spinner began the match five wickets behind Shakib’s record of 246 career dismissals. He chipped away steadily. Taijul picked up one wicket in Ireland’s first innings on the second day, then added three more on the third day to draw level at 246.

He moved past Shakib on the fourth day when he removed Andy Balbirnie, a dismissal that made him Bangladesh’s leading wicket-taker in the format.

Taijul, who made his Test debut in 2014 against the West Indies in Kingstown, has now taken 249 wickets in 57 matches. Shakib has slipped to second place with 246 wickets in 71 Tests. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, a right-arm off-spinner, is third on the list with 209 wickets from 56 Tests.
