Bangladesh has been eliminated from the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup in Zimbabwe on Monday (January 26) after losing a seven-wicket defeat to England in a Super Six match. Chasing a modest target of 137, the English youngsters reached the total with seven wickets in hand and 155 balls to spare.

At Bulawayo, Bangladesh, the former champions were bowled out for 136 in 38.1 overs after opting to bat first. Rifat Beg scored 31, Md Abdullah made 25, while captain Azizul Hakim contributed 20 runs. For England, Sebastian Morgan claimed three wickets for 28 runs, while Ralphie Albert and Manny Lumsden took two wickets apiece.

England then cruised to victory, riding on an unbeaten 59 off 50 balls from Thomas Rew.

The defeat ended Bangladesh’s campaign before the semifinals. Azizul Hakim’s side will play a formalities match against Zimbabwe on January 31.

Bangladesh advanced to the Super Six stage as the runners-up in Group B, where they were placed alongside England and Zimbabwe. In the Super Six round, six teams are competing in Group 1 and six in Group 2, with the top two from each group progressing to the semifinals. With Monday’s win, England moved to the top of Group 2 with six points, followed by India on four and Pakistan on two.

Australia is the defending champions of the Under-19 World Cup, while India have won the title a record five times. Bangladesh lifted the trophy in 2020 but have now exited before the semifinals in three consecutive editions.
