Hasan Mahmud on Sunday became the first Bangladesh pacer to take a Test hat-trick, striking with three consecutive balls against Afghanistan on the third day of their one-off Test in Abu Dhabi.
He dismissed Ismat Alam, Qais Ahmad and Zia-ur-Rehman in the 83rd over at Zayed Cricket Stadium, becoming only the second Bangladesh bowler to achieve the feat in Test cricket.
The 26-year-old ended a 13-year wait for Bangladesh’s third hat-trick in Test cricket, after off-spinner Sohag Gazi took one against New Zealand in Chattogram in October 2013. Alok Kapali took Bangladesh’s first, against Pakistan in 2003.
Hasan bowled Ismat for one with a delivery that moved back into the batter and passed beneath his bat. He then induced an outside edge from Qais, with wicketkeeper Litton Das diving to his right to take the catch. Zia was trapped lbw next ball; the on-field umpire initially turned down the appeal, but Bangladesh reviewed and ball-tracking confirmed the delivery would have hit the stumps.
Hasan had five wickets for 55 runs in 21 overs, with 5 maidens and a 2.62 economy. Fellow fast bowler Ebadot Hossain claimed three for 56.
The Afghan innings came to a halt at 240 runs. Bangladesh is batting in their second innings with a lead on Day 3.
