Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who was recently named Bangladesh’s new ODI captain, has received his first squad as skipper. On Monday (June 23), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced the 16-member team for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka, with opening batter Mohammad Naim Sheikh making a comeback after nearly two years. Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed has also returned from injury.
Chief Selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain announced the squad at a press conference held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
The three-match ODI series will begin on July 2, with all-rounder Miraz leading the side in what will be his first series as ODI captain.
Naim Sheikh last played for the national side nearly two years ago. In this year’s Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, he scored 618 runs in 11 matches and finished as the tournament’s third-highest run-scorer. He replaces left-handed batter Soumya Sarkar, who has not fully recovered from a recurring back injury, the Chief Selector said.
Team Bangladesh is currently playing a Test series in Sri Lanka. The first Test in Galle ended in a draw, while the second and final Test begins on June 25 in Colombo. The ODI series will also begin in Colombo on July 2, followed by the second ODI on July 5 at the same venue. The third and final match will be played on July 8 in Pallekele.
After the ODI series, the two teams will face off in a three-match T20 series. Litton Das will captain the Bangladesh T20 side. This marks a rare occasion for Bangladesh, with three different captains leading the team across three formats.
