Bangladesh suffered an innings-and-51-run defeat to Australia in the second Test of the series in Mackay. The match ended in just two days.

After being bowled out for 64 in their first innings, Bangladesh’s batting collapsed again in the second innings. Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side were dismissed for 95 in 38.3 overs, ending the two-match series in a 1-1 draw.

Australia won the toss and elected to field first. Mitchell Starc quickly vindicated Captain Pat Cummins’ decision. With a superb bowling performance, Starc bowled Bangladesh out for just 64 in the first innings, taking six wickets for 12 runs. Shariful Islam was Bangladesh’s top scorer with 14 runs.

Australia, in reply, also failed to post a big total. A brilliant spell from Shoriful Islam saw the hosts bowled out for 210. He claimed seven wickets for 48 runs alone, registering the best innings bowling figures by a Bangladeshi bowler in a Test outside the country. Cameron Green top-scored for Australia with 67, while Steve Smith made 42 and Nathan Lyon scored 32. Australia secured a first-innings lead of 146 runs.

Bangladesh failed to recover in their second innings either. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto was dismissed for 31, while Tanzid Hasan scored nine. Litton Das faced 10 deliveries without scoring. Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 29 off 80 balls, holding one end together. Bangladesh’s innings eventually ended at 95 in 38.3 overs.

Australia’s Starc took four wickets, while Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon claimed three wickets each.

A total of 30 wickets fell over the two days of the Mackay Test. Eighteen wickets fell on the opening day alone. Starc and Shoriful both claimed six wickets each, making it a day dominated by the bowlers. On the second day, Bangladesh’s second innings ended quickly after Australia completed their innings.

Bangladesh’s batting was disappointing in both innings. But Shoriful Islam’s seven-wicket haul was one of the team’s major positives in the Test. Meanwhile, Mitchell Starc delivered the match-winning performance, taking 10 wickets across the two innings.

Despite the heavy defeat in Mackay, Bangladesh’s historic achievement on the Australia tour remains intact. After a 23-year gap, Bangladesh returned to Australia for a Test series and made history by defeating the hosts by nine wickets in the opening match in Darwin. It was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.
