Another chance to finally win a series in Sri Lanka

Litton Das’ team will secure the series 2-1 if they win the third and final match in Colombo. This series-deciding match will start at 7:30 pm today.

Bangladesh has never won a series in the island nation of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has won the Test series, and even though the opportunity came in the ODIs, Bangladesh could not grab it. This is the last chance for Bangladesh as the T20 series also ends on Wednesday (July 16). Litton Das’ team will secure the series 2-1 if they win the third and final match in Colombo. This series-deciding match will start at 7:30 pm.

After a thrilling draw in Galle, Sri Lanka crushed Bangladesh in the Colombo Test. The first two matches of the ODI series were played in Colombo. After the Sri Lankans made a good start, Bangladesh won the second match. That sealed the series. However, the Sinhalese won the last match in Pallekele and secured the series 2-1. The wait for the Tigers also increased. However, the opportunities are not over in the current tour.

Bangladesh levelled the T20 series by defeating the hosts by 83 runs on Sunday. Litton Das played a captain’s knock of 76 runs to lead the team to victory. Shamim Hossain’s all-around prowess and the combined efforts of the bowlers were also there. All in all, the visiting team has returned to the series by destroying the Sinhalese with bat and ball. With that victory, the Tigers have a chance to win the series for the first time on Sri Lankan soil.

This is Bangladesh’s third T20 series in the island nation. Despite losing a one-match series in 2013, the Tigers managed to draw a two-match series in 2017. However, having played 7 matches in Sri Lanka, the odds of winning are heavily in favor of Bangladesh. The Sinhalese have won 3 against the Tigers’ 4 wins. However, in total, the Sri Lankans have won 12 and Bangladesh 7 out of the 19 matches they have faced so far.

Apart from this, Bangladesh has never won any of the Seven ODI series played in Sri Lanka. The Tigers have managed to draw two series in Sri Lanka in the 50-over format. Bangladesh also failed to secure a victory in any of the Seven Test series in Sri Lanka. The best success so far is drawing two Test series in 2017.

It would be a great achievement for Litton Das’ team to win a series in Sri Lanka for the first time in all three formats. Despite a batting disaster in the beginning in Dambulla on Sunday, Bangladesh were able to set a target of 178 runs in the end, relying on Litton’s 76-run innings. Chasing this run, Charith Asalanka’s team was bundled out for just 94 runs.
