The Feni District Jail is located in the Rani Hat area, adjacent to the Feni-Chhagalnaiya Road. Cooking for the inmates is done on the ground floor of the three-story prison building. However, the ground floor has been submerged due to flooding, leading to food shortages and clean drinking water for the inmates. Additionally, there is a severe housing crisis in the prison.
Despite the dire conditions in the jails of Noakhali, Cumilla, and Lakshmipur, similar to those in Feni, prison authorities are working tirelessly to manage the crisis. They are providing dry food and are prepared to take further action if the floodwaters continue to rise, potentially worsening the inmates' food and housing shortages.
The Feni prison authorities report that the entire area was submerged due to the sudden flood on Thursday. The ground floor of the prison building was underwater, forcing the inmates on that floor to be moved to the second and third floors. However, the cooking area could not be relocated, leading to a severe food shortage for the inmates.
Authorities also stated that each inmate is usually allotted 24 square feet of space, but currently, three share that space. Additionally, items like fish, meat, and vegetables have been removed from the food menu.
The Feni District Jail-1, established in Rani Hat in 1996, is built on 7.5 acres of land with a capacity to hold 350 inmates. Due to its relatively low-lying location, the prison grounds were inundated as soon as the floodwaters began. The flooding has also led to suspending electricity and internet connections in the prison area.
The neighboring district of Cumilla has also been severely affected by continuous rain and mountain runoff. However, because the Cumilla District Jail is situated on relatively higher ground, it had not been flooded as of yesterday. Nevertheless, the flood's impact has disrupted regular food supplies to the Cumilla jail for the past two days.
Food supplies are also disrupted daily in the Noakhali and Lakshmipur district jails. Although water has not entered these two jails, the impact of the flood has led to the removal of vegetables, fish, and meat from the food menu.
Meanwhile, to address the food crisis at the Feni District Jail, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) delivered dry and cooked food to the inmates on Saturday. The food supplies were transported by helicopter.
BGB Public Relations Officer Mohammad Shariful Islam said that the floodwaters had submerged everything, including the kitchen, at the Feni District Jail. No food arrangements could be made under these conditions, so the BGB initiated sending food supplies there.
Additional Inspector General of Prisons Colonel Sheikh Suzaur Rahman told Bonik Barta, "Due to the sudden flood, there are some issues in the Feni, Cumilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur jails. Among them, the Feni District Jail, being relatively low-lying, was flooded last Thursday. On Friday, the water level was still chest-deep. Food has been delivered to that jail under these conditions. However, while no water has entered the Cumilla, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur jails, there are problems supplying vegetables, fish, and meat due to flooding in surrounding areas and markets. This issue is being addressed with alternative menus."
