Chicken
vendor Hannan Sarder’s four-month-old daughter, Anisa, fell ill a few days ago.
Despite wanting to take her to the hospital, Hannan did not have the money. The
curfew had stopped his business for several days. On Wednesday (July 25),
Hannan was forced to go out to sell chickens in Banasree area to cover his daughter's medical expenses. However, he was arrested by the police in
connection with violence.
His
wife heard of his arrest that night. For three days, she went to the Rampura
police station to meet him but was unsuccessful.
Yesterday,
this reporter talked to Hannan's wife at CMM court. She sat on the court's balcony
holding their feverish daughter in the suffocating heat. She was hoping to see
her husband. Anisa eventually fell asleep in her mother's arms while waiting.
Meanwhile,
residents in Kajla, Jatrabari claimed that two cousins were arrested after
police broke down their door. They said that late at night on July 21, Shafin,
a first-year student at Kabi Nazrul College, and his cousin Arafat Munna were sleeping
in their room. Shortly after 1 AM, police took them away.
Shafin's
mother said, "I was working in other people's homes to educate my son. Now
their future is being destroyed." She explained that Arafat came from
their village looking for work. Arafat was fatherless and had not progressed
far in his education.
Upon
hearing of her son's arrest, Shafin's mother rushed to the court from
Patuakhali’s Galachipa upazila. She told Bonik Barta on the court’s premises,
"I sent my son to Dhaka to support our fatherless family. Now, how will I
cover the lawyer's fees and travel expenses to the court? Instead of
identifying the real culprits, they are indiscriminately arresting
everyone."
Similarly,
Rajon, who is a goat trader, was arrested from Dohar’s Joypara. His sister had
been trying to see him through every prison van on the court premises. She
tried since morning, yet could not catch a glimpse of him. She stated that he
was being detained in connection with a 2023 case.
