After two straight days of downpour, heavy rain continued intermittently across Dhaka on Wednesday (July 9), causing widespread waterlogging in many low-lying areas of the capital. The rainfall has severely disrupted the daily commute for officegoers and students, with knee-deep water reported in areas such as Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Malibagh, Badda, and parts of Old Dhaka.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the capital recorded 77 millimeters of rain in the 24 hours between 6 am Tuesday and 6 am Wednesday. Forecasters said the sky would remain cloudy throughout the day, with continued rainfall. However, rains may start to ease in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Met Office has issued alerts for inland river ports. From 5 am to 1 pm Wednesday, ports in Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar regions may experience rain or thunderstorms accompanied by temporary gusts or squalls blowing from the south or southeast at speeds of 45 to 60 kilometers per hour.
Tariful Newaz Kabir, a meteorologist at the department, said, “Rain is likely to continue throughout the day in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, and Barisal divisions. However, showers may begin to subside in Dhaka by afternoon. Rainfall in the capital is expected to be lighter today compared to yesterday.”
