Ferry services on the Dhaka-Barisal river route resumed on Tuesday night after a two-day suspension caused by dense fog, the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority confirmed.
Operations had been halted since 6 p.m. on Sunday. Five vessels departed Barisal river port for the capital at 9 p.m. once weather conditions improved, said BIWTA Barisal Traffic Inspector Zulfikar Ali. Four were direct services; one was operating as a via route.
The disruption has raised fears of extended journey times. A typical eight-hour voyage could now take twelve hours or more, officials and passengers cautioned.
“I have boarded the ferry enduring the intense cold,” said passenger Abdul Motalab, who was travelling from Barisal to Dhaka. “But I am doubtful about reaching Dhaka safely within the scheduled time.”
Inspector Zulfikar Ali stated that services resumed on Tuesday night under directives from BIWTA headquarters.
