Floods cut off Parshuram, Fulgazi as 30 villages inundated

Parshuram Upazila has become completely cut off from the Feni district center due to submerged roads, while several villages in Fulgazi have also lost communication with the Upazila.

Heavy rainfall and upstream water from India have triggered severe flooding in Bangladesh’s Feni district, breaching embankments of the Muhuri, Kahuya, and Silonia rivers at 14 different points. The resulting deluge has submerged at least 30 villages across Parshuram and Fulgazi Upazilas, leaving thousands of residents stranded and major road connections disrupted.

Parshuram Upazila has become completely cut off from the Feni district center due to submerged roads, while several villages in Fulgazi have also lost communication with the Upazila.

According to local administration sources, the Muhuri River embankment was breached at two locations in Jungolgona, three in Aloka, one in Shaldhar (all under Parshuram), and another point in Uttar Sreepur of Fulgazi. The Silonia River overflowed and broke the embankment at one location in Gadanagar (Parshuram) and two in Derpara (Fulgazi). In addition, breaches along the Kahuya River were reported at two spots in Satkuchia and one each in Berabaria (Parshuram) and Daulatpur (Fulgazi).

These breaches have inundated thousands of homes, displacing families and forcing some to seek shelter.

Arifur Rahman, Parshuram Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), said, “We’re closely monitoring the situation on the ground. Many people haven’t yet moved to shelters. New areas are being flooded as the embankments continue to collapse.”

Fulgazi UNO Fahria Islam stated, “We have confirmed four breaches along embankments in our upazila. Over a hundred people have already taken refuge in shelters, where we’re providing both dry food and cooked meals. Due to the situation, all half-yearly exams at the upazila’s higher secondary institutions have been suspended for today, July 9.”

According to Md Mojibur Rahman, acting officer at the Feni weather office, the district has been experiencing moderate to heavy rainfall for two consecutive days. He said, “We recorded 441 millimeters of rain in the past 24 hours — the highest in recent years. Moderate rainfall is expected to continue through Wednesday and Thursday.”

Abul Kashem, Sub-Divisional Engineer at the Feni Water Development Board, warned that water levels in the rivers remain above the danger mark. He said, “If the rain continues upstream, there is a risk of further embankment collapse.”
