Localized solutions stressed for waste management, recycling

Environment Adviser Rizwana said that environmentally sound technologies must guide future waste management strategies.

Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today (April 13) stressed the urgent need for localized solutions to waste management, proper segregation, and recycling of wastes to address Bangladesh's growing pollution challenges.

"Segregation, recycling, and composting (of wastes) must be prioritized before exploring waste-to-energy options," she said at a meeting with a high-level Japanese environmental expert delegation, led by Yoneda Johichiro, Representative Director of Chikyu Network Cooperative.

The meeting was held at Pani Bhaban in Dhaka. Environment Secretary Dr. Farhina Ahmed was also present.

Environment Adviser Rizwana, also the Water Resources Adviser, said environmentally sound technologies must guide future waste management strategies.

"The government is eager to adopt sustainable models, but they must be safe, inclusive, and locally relevant," he said.

The meeting focused on exploring collaborative pollution control and sustainable waste management efforts.

The environment adviser highlighted Japan's global reputation for environmental excellence and welcomed knowledge-sharing and future cooperation.

"We are keen to learn how Japan keeps its environment clean and how you manage waste efficiently," she added.

"Your experience with waste-to-energy solutions is also of interest, though we must remain cautious about their environmental impact."

Adviser Rizwana also pointed out the importance of public trust in environmental initiatives.

"Many people are skeptical of government-led projects due to past shortcomings. Therefore, your proposals must prioritize transparency, an effective collection system, and strong community engagement," she added.

The Japanese delegation strongly expressed interest in working with Bangladesh on pollution control, biodiversity conservation, and modern waste management.

Both parties agreed to explore technical cooperation shortly.
