Met office warns cold wave, dense fog throughout week

Temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged at night, with a slight increase possible during the day.

A mild cold wave sweeping across several districts of Bangladesh is expected to persist throughout the week, the country’s meteorology department has warned, with dense fog threatening to disrupt air, road, and river transport.

The weather office said the cold wave is affecting several districts including Pabna, Sirajganj, Jashore, Kushtia, Cumilla, Moulvibazar, and Sylhet. It forecast moderate to thick fog across the country from midnight until morning, which could linger in places until noon.

Temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged at night, with a slight increase possible during the day. The lowest temperature recorded on Sunday was 9°C in Pabna’s Ishwardi, while in the capital Dhaka the minimum was 13.2°C.

Meteorologist Md Tariful Newaz Kabir warned on Monday that the fog could temporarily disrupt flight operations, inland water transport, and road communications.

The met office cited an extension of the sub-continental high-pressure system over West Bengal and adjoining western parts of Bangladesh driving the condition. A seasonal low-pressure area sits over the South Bay of Bengal, with an extension reaching the north-east of the bay.
