Behula Dorodi, a Bangladeshi film based on the ancient “Behula Lachari” folk heritage of the Mymensingh and Tangail regions, is set to be shown at multiple international film festivals. The tradition is linked to the medieval Manasamangal epic poems.
The film had its domestic release under the Utshob Originals banner. It played to a packed auditorium at Dhaka International Film Festival (DIFF) in January this year, receiving a warm reception from audiences and critics.
Jahidul Islam, the producer, said he aims to establish Bengali cinema as a viable commercial proposition internationally while preserving “dying folk traditions” for a new generation through the film.
Discussions are underway for a commercial release outside Bangladesh, according to production sources.
Directed by Sabuj Khan, the film stars Fazlur Rahman Babu with a score by Nirjher Chowdhury. Critics have hailed it as a distinctive addition to contemporary Bangladeshi cinema for its fusion of folk heritage with modern film language.
