After the fire

Actress Sharmeen Akhee’s fearless return to screen

Bangladeshi actress rebuilds her career after a devastating burn injury, finding new life through voice acting and renewed confidence.

When Bangladeshi actress Sharmeen Akhee was engulfed in flames on a film set in Mirpur back in January 2023, her life changed in an instant. Thirty-five percent of her body was burned. For more than a year, she battled through surgeries, pain, and despair — but she never stopped being an artist.

“I was in a battlefield inside the hospital,” Akhee recently recounted. “That time taught me to see life differently. I learned to love myself again.”

Akhee, once known for her versatility across stage, television, and film, began her career in Chattogram with the Arindam Natya Sampraday troupe before becoming a familiar face on television. Her breakout came in 2010 with Bhalobasha Ki Kore Bhalo Hoy, followed by her film debut Sincerely Yours, Dhaka (2018). Later, she gained wide recognition for her work in the web series Just a Joke, Darling (2024).

The fire could have ended it all. Many producers and directors quietly assumed her career was over. But Akhee refused to disappear. Even when she couldn’t act on camera, she turned to voice work — dubbing shows like Dirilis: Ertugrul, Kurulus: Osman, Hercules, and MacGyver into Bangla.

Her friend and mentor, actor Shiplu, encouraged her to use her voice as a new form of performance. “I never imagined acting with only my voice,” Akhee said. “That gave me a new beginning.”

Voice acting brought her emotional comfort and restored her artistic identity. “After the fire, I stayed away from work for a year. Being able to perform again, even just with my voice, gave me back my life as an artist,” she said.

This year, she returned to on-screen acting with Rahat Kabir’s fiction Five Go Wild, playing the lead female role. And for the first time, she even danced in an item song. “At first, I was scared, lacked confidence,” she admitted. “But gradually I realized that if you try, anything is possible. The audience’s love made it all worthwhile.”

Today, Sharmeen Akhee carries both titles — actress and voice artist. Her journey is no longer just about recovery; it’s about reinvention. “Confidence has come back,” she said. “If you try, everything is possible. My path as an artist won’t stop here.”

Her story, in the end, is more than just a comeback — like a Phoenix rising from the ashes, it’s a rebirth from fire.
