Somnur Monir Konal

‘Music is my life, and I belong to music’

Konal’s latest release, “Moyna,” has created a massive buzz among listeners. Soon after its release, it started receiving praise across social media and other platforms.

Somnur Monir Konal is one of the country’s most popular vocalists. From film songs to solo music, she has made her mark in every sphere with her voice. Recently, her new song “Moyna” was released, and within just a few days, it topped YouTube’s trending chart. In a conversation with Wahidur Rahman, Konal talked about Moyna, her current musical journey, and future plans.

The magic of “Moyna”

Konal’s latest release, “Moyna,” has created a massive buzz among listeners. Soon after its release, it started receiving praise across social media and other platforms. The song quickly climbed to the top of the trending list, which she says is a proud moment for her.

She shared, “I regularly check the comments from listeners and viewers—Moyna has received praise everywhere. Many from my music fraternity have shared the song. I even uploaded a video on my Facebook page with their comments. These responses from listeners and viewers really encourage me.”

Lyrics always come first

When selecting a song, Konal prioritizes lyrics above all else—whether it’s Moyna or any other track.

“There’s not a single song in my career with vulgar or inappropriate lyrics. Even while recording film songs, I go over the lyrics again and again. If there’s a line I don’t like, I stay there and ask to have it changed before I sing it.”

She has been following this principle and awareness since 2009. According to her, no matter how beautiful the melody is, she won’t sing a song if the lyrics contain anything objectionable.

A new chance to prove herself in every song

To Konal, every song feels like a new journey.

“Just like every love feels new, every song is a fresh opportunity for me and a chance to prove myself again. Each song demands a different mood. For example, Amar Ki How Tumi was all about emotion and heartbreak, while Moyna was full-on energy and dance rhythm.”

According to her, a singer becomes successful when they try to embody the character a song demands.

Cinematic depth: The result of effort and practice

Listeners often say that Konal’s voice carries a cinematic feel. When asked about it, she said,

“It’s not something I was born with. I picked it up by listening closely to my favorite artists and trying to internalize their style.”

She believes that to deliver the perfect voice for film music, one needs rigorous dedication and mindful practice.

Stage vs studio

Konal considers the stage to be the most sacred space for an artist.

“When I stand on stage, I feel the energy of the entire crowd. Their love, their requests to hear specific songs—all of it deeply moves me.”

On the other hand, she says the studio experience is entirely different. “The studio is where I craft music in my own way. It’s a space where I dive deep into myself.”

Flashbacks from the judge’s seat

Sitting as a judge on TV music competitions often brings back memories of Konal’s early days.

“I’ll never forget my beginning. Many of the great people from those days are no longer around, but their teachings are still priceless to me. What they taught me still guides my path.”

Music is her identity

After all these years in music, has she ever thought of stepping away from it?

Konal says, “Music is my life. Sometimes I wonder, is this really my place? But the answer is always the same—music is who I am, and I belong to music.”

What’s coming next?

Speaking about upcoming projects, Konal shared that several songs are already prepared.

She shared, “Many songs were on hold for Moyna, and they’ll gradually be released. I’m also working on some personal initiatives and research projects, which I plan to share soon.”
