Singer Noble granted bail in rape case

Noble had been in jail since May 20 after being arrested in a rape case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

A Dhaka court has granted bail to singer Mainul Ahsan Noble in a rape case. The order came on Tuesday (June 24) from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka following a bail petition filed by the accused.

Sub-Inspector Ila Moni of the Crime and Information Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) confirmed the development to the media. She said the complainant was present in court and submitted a written statement stating she had no objection to Noble’s bail. The court then approved the petition after the hearing.

On June 19, the court granted Noble permission to marry the complainant. Later that day, under the supervision of prison authorities, their marriage was formally registered at the main gate of Keraniganj Central Jail. Noble, the woman, and four witnesses—two from each side—were present during the registration.

Noble had been in jail since May 20 after being arrested in a rape case filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act. His lawyer had told the court that the woman was Noble’s wife and denied any rape allegations. However, the lawyer, Jasim Uddin, failed to present a marriage certificate (kabinnama) to the court at the time.

The woman accused Noble of confining her for seven months, during which she was repeatedly raped and abused. According to the case statement, the woman first met Noble through Facebook in 2018. She was then living in a rented house in Mohammadpur while pursuing her bachelor’s degree at a college in Dhaka.

On November 12 last year, Noble reportedly invited her to his studio in Demra. When she tried to leave around 8 pm, he allegedly seized and smashed her phone. He then raped her and recorded a video of the incident. She was later held captive in that residence for seven months under threats based on the video.

Police informed the court that the woman’s parents came to Dhaka after the abuse video went viral. She was rescued from Noble’s house, and on May 19, she filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
