While cinemas in Bangladesh remain largely empty throughout the year, they see a rare surge in visitors during Eid. Cinemas become the most enjoyed source of entertainment during the holidays, and naturally, the buzz around new releases also grows louder. To capitalize on this moment, filmmakers spend the entire year preparing their films for an Eid debut.

This year is no exception. Ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, which will be celebrated on Saturday (June 7), production houses are making a final push to release their films. Although at one point around a dozen movies were expected to premiere this Eid, four titles—Nadan, Sardarbarir Khela, Shironam, and Pinik—have backed out. In the end, only six films are set for release: Taandob, Utshob, Insaaf, Tagar, Esha Murder: Kormofol, and Neel Chokro.

According to industry insiders, many films postponed their release due to theater shortages and complications with booking agents.

Despite several posters announcing Eid releases, many of these films have not followed up with significant promotional campaigns, drawing criticism on social media. While some songs from these films have been well-received, their late release has limited audience engagement.

Here’s a look at the six films confirmed for release this Eid:

Taandob

Shakib Khan remains the undisputed king of Eid releases, and once again, he headlines the most anticipated film of the season—Taandob. Fans are eagerly waiting to see their favorite star back on the big screen. The film has already released its poster and teaser. Sabila Nur makes her silver screen debut opposite Shakib Khan, while Jaya Ahsan plays a key supporting role. The plot revolves around a dramatic incident involving an attack on a television station.

Insaaf

Directed by Sanjoy Somadder, Insaaf features Tasnia Farin, Mosharraf Karim, and Sariful Razz. It marks Tasnia Farin’s first role as a mainstream commercial film lead. Previously, she appeared in the film Fatima. The story is set in Dhaka, where crime levels begin to spike alarmingly. Rumors spread that a notorious former don named Yusuf might be behind it. Amid this chaos, Farin’s character—a police officer—reopens a long-forgotten case. The film follows her investigation into a growing web of crime and mystery.

Neel Chokro

Neel Chokro, which received its censor board approval in February, stars Arifin Shuvoo and Mondera Chakroborty. Audiences have responded positively to its teaser, poster, and the song Jete Jete, which has been widely shared online. Directed by Mithu Khan, the film explores the dark side of technology. It shows how today’s youth are addicted to social media and gaming, often falling into traps set by criminals who exploit digital platforms. Neel Chokro was previously showcased at the American Film Market and portrays the harrowing reality of cybercrime.

Tagar

Actors Ador Azad and Puja Cherry reunite for Tagar, an action-thriller directed by Aalok Hasan. The promotional campaign is in full swing, with its posters, teasers, and songs already released. Set in a port town, the film follows the story of Tagar, a rebellious young man who stands up against the local black market and corrupt power brokers. His defiance puts him on their hit list, but he refuses to back down, setting up a high-stakes conflict.

Esha Murder: Karmaphal

Though earlier slated for release, Esha Murder: Karmaphal has now confirmed its premiere this Eid-ul-Azha. Azmeri Haque Badhon plays the lead role of a police officer in this thriller directed by Sunny Sanwar. The story unfolds around the investigation of three murders and rapes, all committed on February 14—Valentine’s Day—in the same district. Officer Lina, played by Azmeri Haque Badhon, sets out to track the brutal killer and uncover the truth in a tense, fast-paced narrative.

Utshob

Directed by Tanim Noor, Utshob brings together a star-studded ensemble cast that includes both current and 90s-era actors. One of the most notable returns is that of veteran actor Zahid Hasan, who appears on the big screen after a long hiatus. The film is based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and tells the story of a stingy, aging businessman. One night during a festive gathering, he is visited by the spirits of former business partners who take him on a journey through his past. These encounters slowly transform him into a kinder, more compassionate man.

Despite a few setbacks, these six films are ready to offer audiences a diverse lineup—from action and thrillers to social dramas and emotional stories—making this Eid another big moment for local cinema.
