‘Biography of Nazrul’: Ferdous Khan’s docu-film highlights a colorful life

Over the years, some fragmented documentaries have been produced on different phases of his life, but there was no comprehensive documentary. That gap has been filled by Ferdous Khan.

Kazi Nazrul Islam lived a life full of vivid experiences and turning points. From an early age, his journey took many unexpected paths before he went on to create remarkable poems, songs, stories, and novels. Inspired by admiration and deep love for the poet’s work, Ferdous Khan has directed a documentary film titled Biography of Nazrul, produced by Dr. Al Amin Khan.

Though Kazi Nazrul Islam is Bangladesh’s national poet, few full-length films or documentaries have been made about him. Over the years, some fragmented documentaries have been produced on different phases of his life, but there was no comprehensive documentary. That gap has been filled by Ferdous Khan. According to producer Dr. Al Amin Khan, the filming began in Trishal, Mymensingh, and later continued at various locations in both Bangladesh and Kolkata that are rich with memories of the poet.

Speaking about the documentary, Dr. Al Amin Khan said, “There are many short documentaries about our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on YouTube. One might focus on Nazrul in Cumilla, another on Nazrul in Trishal, Kolkata, or Dhaka. I felt that there should be a complete biographical documentary on Nazrul. That’s what led me to take this initiative. I thought it was essential to create a film on Nazrul while people who personally knew him were still alive. That’s why the documentary includes interviews with renowned scholars such as Professor Dr. Rafiqul Islam, Professor Dr. Anisuzzaman, and Professor Serajul Islam Choudhury.”

Biography of Nazrul was completed about five years ago. Dr. Al Amin said the film had its premiere on November 20, 2020, at Blockbuster Cinemas in Jamuna Future Park. It ran there for a week, followed by two-week screenings at Star Cineplex in Bashundhara and again at Cineplex in Shimanto Square.

“Everyone who watched it said they had no idea there was so much to learn about Nazrul,” he added.

On May 25, 2021, the film was broadcasted on Bangladesh Television (BTV). In 2023, Biography of Nazrul was invited to Michigan, USA, where it was screened in both Michigan and New York.

In August 2024, the film was screened at the FOBANA Film Festival in Virginia. It is also scheduled to be shown this August in Atlanta, Georgia. Additionally, it was screened at 9:00 am today at North South University.

The 94-minute-long docu-film features music direction by Pintu Ghosh.
