Amid
ongoing unrest in Dhaka’s Ashulia area, production has been halted at nearly
219 garment factories out of over a thousand. Among them, 86 factories have
been shut down indefinitely under Section 13(1) of the Labor Act, while
authorities at 133 factories were forced to declare a general holiday.
Sarowar
Alam, Superintendent of Police for Industrial Police-1, confirmed the
information between the morning and 11:30 am on Thursday (September 12).
Earlier in the day, workers had reported for duty at most factories in the
Savar and Ashulia industrial areas.
According
to Industrial Police, while production has been halted at 219 factories today
(Thursday, September 12), there have been no reports of road blockades,
attacks, or vandalism at any of the factories. However, worker unrest over
various demands had already been ongoing inside several factories. Workers at
those facilities did not return to work today. In some factories, workers
staged walkouts after entering the premises, halting production. In total,
production at 219 factories has come to a stop, with 86 of them officially shut
down under Section 13(1) of the Labor Act of 2006.
Sarowar
Alam, the Superintendent of Police for Industrial Police-1, stated, “By 11:30
am, production had stopped at 219 factories in the industrial area. Of these,
86 have been shut down under Section 13(1) of the Labor Act, while the
remaining 133 factories declared a general holiday for today.”
He
added, “To prevent any untoward incidents, additional police have been deployed
in front of the factories. Joint patrols are also ongoing in the industrial
area. We are monitoring the law and order situation, and no untoward incidents
have been reported so far.”
