Access
to Facebook and WhatsApp was restored today, Wednesday (July 31) after 2 PM.
Earlier today, State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information
Technology, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, had announced that social media platforms would
be reopened this afternoon.
State
Minister announced, "Considering the overall situation, we are lifting the
temporary restrictions that were imposed on certain social media platforms for
a short period."
He
made this announcement after a meeting with representatives from the owner companies
of these social media platforms. The meeting, starting at 9 AM, took place at
the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) office in
Agargaon, Dhaka. Following the meeting, the State Minister briefed journalists.
As clashes broke out over the quota reform movement, mobile and broadband internet services were suspended from July 17 and July 18 respectively. Broadband internet was partially restored on July 23, five days later. After ten days, mobile internet was restored on July 28. Today (July 31), access to Facebook and other social media platforms has been restored.
