The Coca-Cola story is the finest examples of partnership between USA & BD — Ju-un Nahar Chowdhury

The Coca-Cola story in Bangladesh is perhaps one of the finest examples of a thriving partnership between the USA and Bangladesh.

The Coca-Cola story in Bangladesh is perhaps one of the finest examples of a thriving partnership between the USA and Bangladesh. This iconic American beverage company first set foot in Bangladesh in 1962, establishing a foothold through Tabani Beverage (TBCL) in Dhaka and K. Rahman in Chattogram (then Chittagong). Over the course of six decades, Coca-Cola has become more than just a provider of refreshing beverages—it has evolved into a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and socio-economic progress for the people of Bangladesh.

By 1982, Coca-Cola’s operations scaled up significantly when Abdul Monem Ltd. (AML) took on the role of its trusted bottling partner, ensuring the brand’s reach across the nation. In 1987, AML set up Coca-Cola’s first full-fledged bottling plant in Cumilla, marking a major milestone in their strategic growth. Later, in 2017, Coca-Cola introduced Coca-Cola Bangladesh Beverages (CCBB), its wholly-owned bottling partner, further cementing the brand’s presence and commitment to the region’s development.

While Coca-Cola’s visual identity is tied to its array of beverages like Coca-Cola, Sprite, Fanta, Kinley, and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, its contribution to Bangladesh transcends the limits of a refreshment company. Guided by its American roots and global philosophy, Coca-Cola has established itself as a key economic driver in Bangladesh, creating value across its entire supply chain—from raw material sourcing and manufacturing to distribution, employment, and community engagement. Coca-Cola’s influence in Bangladesh is deeply rooted in its commitment to empowering communities and driving economic growth. According to its Socio-Economic Impact Report (2021), the beverage giant contributed an impressive Tk1,220 crore (USD 140 million) to Bangladesh’s GDP in 2019, accounting for 0.11% of the country’s total GDP. This number represents not just the economic value derived directly from manufacturing but also the ripple effects across its comprehensive value chain.

Employment is another cornerstone of Coca-Cola’s contribution to Bangladesh’s economy. The Coca-Cola system supports approximately 22,100 jobs in the country, including 833 direct, full-time roles within its operations and a staggering 21,300 indirect jobs across allied sectors such as raw material production, transportation, and retail. Significantly, for every direct job created by Coca-Cola, 26 additional jobs are supported in other industries, reinforcing the brand’s role as a catalyst of growth across diverse sectors in Bangladesh.

Coca-Cola’s six-decade legacy in Bangladesh underscores its role as a transformative force—a company that not only quenches thirst but also drives economic development, job creation, and community upliftment. As Coca-Cola continues to refresh the spirit of Bangladesh, it stands as a shining testament to the enduring partnership between the USA and Bangladesh, proving that shared vision and collaboration can forge pathways to prosperity, one bottle and one opportunity at a time.
