Benapole Custom House has collected BDT 72.15 billion in revenue during FY 2024–25, surpassing its annual target by BDT 3.16 billion. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) had set a target of BDT 67.05 billion, which was exceeded by 4.72 percent.
According to customs sources, in the previous 2023–24 fiscal year, the target was BDT 59.48 billion, and the collection reached BDT 61.67 billion—BDT 2.19 billion above the target.
Despite protests by the NBR Reform Unity Council, including pen-down and complete shutdown programs, Benapole customs officials, including the commissioner, remained present and closely supervised revenue activities. This strong oversight contributed to the surplus revenue, said Motiar Rahman of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IBCCI).
Benapole land port handles nearly 80 percent of Bangladesh’s land-based imports from India, with trade volume totaling around BDT 400 billion annually. Of this, approximately BDT 100 billion is collected each year as direct and indirect revenue.
Imdadul Haque Lata, General Secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Association, credited strong anti-evasion measures by customs officials for the higher-than-target revenue. He said 400–500 trucks import goods from India daily, while 150–200 trucks carry exports to India.
Customs data showed that the highest revenue in FY 2024–25 came from goods such as fresh fruits, woven fabric, aluminum, motor parts, piston engines, diesel engines, ferro-silico manganese, iron towers, latex, tubes, pipes, and steel blades.
Although commercial imports through Benapole fell by 62,464.31 tons compared to the previous year, revenue increased by BDT 7.48 billion. Political tensions following a change in government also affected trade flows—halting yarn imports from India and the export of garments, jute, and jute goods from Bangladesh.
Benapole Land Port Deputy Director Mamun Tarafder said that exports to India rose to 381,440.77 tons in FY 2024–25 from 350,774.85 tons the year before—an increase of 30,665.92 tons. He noted that infrastructure upgrades at the port are ongoing and expected to further boost trade.
Customs Commissioner Md Kamruzzaman stated, “Although overall imports dropped by 8 percent during the outgoing fiscal year, revenue grew by 13.51 percent. That’s a major achievement for Benapole Customs.”
He added, “We’re following a zero-tolerance policy at the port to prevent revenue evasion. Any irregularities are met with strict legal action to ensure full revenue recovery.”
