HAMS Garments Limited and the Infrastructure Development Company Limited (IDCOL) were honoured on Thursday for their contributions to green industrialisation and climate finance at the Green Dialogue on climate change and economic realignment in Dhaka.

Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo presented the awards at the event, organised by Bonik Barta at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon.

Engineer Shafiqur Rahman, managing director of HAMS Group, received the honour on behalf of HAMS Garments, while SM Monirul Islam, IDCOL’s acting managing director, accepted it on behalf of IDCOL.

HAMS Garments, based in Gazipur’s Sreepur, scored 108 out of 110 in the LEED rating, the highest in its category worldwide under the US Green Building Council’s assessment. The assessment considers energy and water efficiency, waste management and a building’s environmental performance.

IDCOL was recognised for bringing $23 million in carbon revenue into the country through carbon credits linked to lower emissions from its solar home systems, highlighting the potential of climate finance in Bangladesh’s renewable energy sector.

Also present were Dr Md Saimum Parvez, special assistant to the prime minister on environment, forest and climate change; Qingfeng Zhang, the Asian Development Bank’s country director; Mustafa Kamal, chairman and managing director of Meghna Group of Industries; Mohammad Mustafa Haider, director of TK Group; Sharif Zahir, chairman of United Commercial Bank and managing director of Ananta Group; and Md Fazlul Kader, managing director of PKSF, among others.

Dewan Hanif Mahmud, editor and publisher of Bonik Barta, moderated the event, which drew policymakers, experts, diplomats, entrepreneurs and representatives of domestic and foreign organisations from the climate, clean energy and economic sectors.
