Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday urged American companies to invest in Bangladesh, telling a 50-member US business delegation that his government was committed to deregulation and strengthening investor protections as it pursues a one-trillion-dollar economy by 2034.
Tarique Rahman, who said he began his career as a businessman, met the US-Bangladesh Business Council delegation at the Prime Minister’s Office, where the meeting began at 9:30 am. He said the government wanted US capital, technology and expertise, and was ready to facilitate investment.
“We welcome your capital, technology, expertise and global experience. We are here to facilitate your success, and that is my personal commitment to you,” he said.
The delegation was led by Oliver Simpson, executive vice-president and chief commercial officer for Excelerate Energy, and former ambassador Atul Keshap, president of the US-Bangladesh Business Council and senior vice-president for South Asia at the US Chamber of Commerce.
The prime minister said Bangladesh had a large and growing market, a young and hardworking population and a strategic location, while the government was focusing on creating a more predictable and investment-friendly environment.
He said the government was simplifying regulations, improving tax and VAT administration, facilitating profit repatriation, reducing red tape and digitising public services.
Rahman added that Bangladesh wanted to expand two-way trade and align its economic partnership with broader US-Bangladesh strategic interests.
“Our objective is not simply to attract foreign direct investment, but to build a durable and mutually beneficial economic partnership,” he said.
The prime minister noted that the delegation had already met ministers, state ministers, advisers and senior officials during the visit. “I hope those discussions have given you a better understanding of our priorities and opportunities,” he said.
“We are also improving infrastructure, ports, logistics and energy security, while encouraging investment in renewable energy and modern technologies. Whether through direct investment, joint ventures, public-private partnerships or consultancy, Bangladesh welcomes your contribution to our nation-building,” the premier said.
