Overall inflation in Bangladesh fell to 8.26 percent in August, the lowest rate recorded in the past nine months. Inflation stood at 8.32 percent in July. But on a month-on-month basis, inflation rose to 2.31 percent in August, up 0.87 percentage points from July.

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) and BBS-released inflation report on Monday showed the figures.

According to BBS data, food inflation fell in August, while non-food inflation increased. Food inflation stood at 7.02 percent, while non-food inflation was 9.32 percent.

Inflation was higher in rural areas than in urban areas. Rural inflation stood at 8.31 percent in August, compared with 8.20 percent in urban areas.

Meanwhile, the growth rate of general wages also declined in August alongside inflation. The general wage rate index stood at 8.22 percent in July, falling to 8.05 percent in August. But on a month-on-month basis, the wage growth rate increased by 0.22 percentage points.

The same trend was observed in wage growth across all three major sectors — agriculture, industry and services.
