The LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh (LOAB) instructed operators, distributors, dealers and retailers to ensure that LPG is sold at the prices set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), citing a satisfactory supply situation in the country. The organisation also warned relevant parties against selling cylinders above the regulated price and storing LPG in violation of regulations.
The information was disclosed in a press release signed by LOAB President Mohammed Amirul Haque on Thursday.
The organisation said LPG imports into the country are currently at a satisfactory level. Bangladesh imported 156,000 tonnes of LPG last month, September and 158,000 tonnes in August. As supply is sufficient compared with demand, there is no scope for creating an artificial shortage in the market, it said.
The press release said a meeting was held at the conference room of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on September 28, where ministry officials and the leadership of the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh held detailed discussions on the supply and pricing situation of LPG. The meeting was informed that the current LPG import situation in the country was satisfactory. Bangladesh imported 156,000 tonnes of LPG in September and 158,000 tonnes in August, which was sufficient to meet demand.
LOAB said that despite adequate supplies, if any operator, distributor, dealer or retailer sells LPG cylinders at prices higher than those set by the BERC, it will constitute a clear violation of the existing law. Similarly, storing LPG in violation of regulations is also a breach of the law. Appropriate punitive measures will be taken against those involved in such irregularities in accordance with the existing law.
Earlier, on September 30, the energy minister issued strict instructions to deputy commissioners at an online meeting to monitor the market. Against this backdrop, LOAB instructed its members to ensure that LPG is sold at the regulated price.
The organisation said all member companies, distributors, dealers and retailers must immediately ensure that LPG is sold at the BERC-set price. The LOAB will also continue to cooperate with the relevant administrative authorities and law enforcement agencies to protect the consumers’ rights and maintain stability in the market.
