A Dhaka court on Thursday granted a five-day remand for the former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lieutenant General (Retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, in a murder case filed over the death of Delwar Hossain in the capital’s Mirpur during the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddique Azad passed the order after the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB), produced him before the court with a seven-day remand prayer. Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the matter to the media.
The Detective Branch detained Sheikh Mamun Khaled from an area in the capital late Wednesday night. Khaled served as the Director of the DGFI’s Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) during the last period of the military-backed caretaker government in 2007–08. He was later appointed as the Director General of DGFI during the Awami League government’s tenure, serving from 2011 to 2013.
In May last year, a court imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Mamun Khaled and his wife, Nigar Sultana, following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The commission stated at the time that an investigation was underway regarding allegations of financial irregularities and wealth-related charges against the couple.
Meanwhile, on Monday night, the Detective Branch arrested another high-profile military officer from the “1/11” era, Lieutenant General (Retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury. He is currently serving a five-day remand in connection with a human trafficking case.
