China has responded positively to the Teesta project, according to Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s High Representative on Rohingya issues. He shared this information during a briefing on Sunday afternoon (March 30) at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka, where he discussed the Chief Adviser’s recent visit to China.
Dr. Khalilur Rahman stated, “China has expressed interest in working on Bangladesh’s water resource management. They have also shown a positive response to the much-discussed Teesta project.”
He further mentioned that Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured full support for Bangladesh’s investment proposals presented by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. Additionally, President Xi personally committed to overseeing the matter.
China has also pledged comprehensive assistance for the rehabilitation of Rohingya refugees. Moreover, the Chinese government has assured its support in meeting Bangladesh’s water demand for the next 50 years.
The event was attended by Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), and the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
Notably, Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus arrived in China last Wednesday (March 26) for a four-day official visit. During the trip, he held multiple meetings with President Xi Jinping and other high-ranking officials. Bangladesh and China signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement along with eight memorandums of understanding (MoUs).
During his visit, Professor Yunus delivered a speech at the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in Hainan and met with various business representatives and organizations. He also held discussions with Chen Huaiyu, Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank).
As part of the visit, Peking University awarded Professor Muhammad Yunus an honorary doctorate. He later addressed students, sharing his insights as a Nobel Laureate economist.
Concluding his historic visit, the Chief Adviser returned home yesterday (March 29). A commercial flight of Air China carrying the Chief Adviser and his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at about 8:10 pm (Bangladesh standard time).
