A fire erupted on the fuel oil tanker MT Meghna Trader at the outer anchorage of the Chattogram port early on Thursday, triggering a coast guard operation that rescued all 22 crew members unharmed.
Bangladesh Coast Guard vessels including the ship Shamol Bangla and the tug BCGT Promotto reached the scene shortly after the blaze was reported at about 7:25 am local time, the force said. Multiple firefighting and rescue teams began efforts to contain the flames.
The crew were brought to safety and no casualties or missing persons had been reported. Firefighting continued later in the morning and the fire was not yet fully under control.
“Damage will be assessed once the fire is brought under control,” Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, a coast guard media officer, told Bonik Barta.
