Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said that an investigation committee will be formed following the toxic gas leak incident from a tanker at Ferdous Steel Ship Breaking Yard in Sitakunda, Chattogram, and necessary actions will be taken based on its report.

He made this remark while speaking to journalists after visiting the victims and injured at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Friday afternoon.

The minister stated that efforts are underway to bring the situation under control following the accident. Thus far, the bodies of eight deceased individuals have been brought to CMCH, while the injured person currently undergoing treatment is in a relatively stable condition.

He noted that the gas situation is extremely hazardous and handling such circumstances is not easy. Personnel, including the military, are working to control the situation. The actual cause of the accident will be revealed through investigation, and no one can say anything with certainty prior to it. The government’s responsibility is to uncover the truth through a proper investigation and take necessary measures based on the findings, he added.

He further added that if the incident is proven by the investigation to have occurred due to the negligence of any individual or institution, appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. Such recurring accidents pose a threat to the industrial sector; therefore, identifying the causes and taking effective measures to prevent such incidents in the future is imperative.
