Dr Dipu Moni, joint general secretary of the banned Awami League and a former education minister, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Monday after falling ill in Munshiganj district jail.
Sources said she became unwell suddenly at around 6 am and was rushed to the DMCH emergency department on the orders of prison authorities. Following initial tests, doctors transferred her to the medicine department for treatment.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Md Fazlu, who accompanied her from the prison, said she was brought quickly from Munshiganj after she fell ill. He said she was receiving treatment in the medicine department of DMCH.
Moni held the posts of foreign minister, education minister and social welfare minister during the Awami League’s 15-year rule. She was arrested from the capital’s Baridhara area on August 19, 2024, days after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country.
More than 38 cases have been filed against Moni, including allegations of murder, crimes against humanity, corruption and ordering violence. She has remained in custody since her arrest.
