In the third quarter (January-March) of the FY 2025-26, the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth dropped to 2.22 percent. In the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year, this rate was 4.53 percent. This means growth has declined by 2.31 percent over the span of a year. During this period, growth in the industrial sector fell into negative territory.
On Monday, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) published the provisional GDP estimates for the third quarter of FY 2025-26.
GDP growth was 4.96 percent in the first quarter (July-September) of FY 2025-26, according to BBS data. In the second quarter, it decreased to 3.03 percent. In the third quarter, growth further declined to 2.22 percent. At current prices, the size of the GDP during this period stood at BDT 15,391 billion.
Growth has declined across all three major sectors — agriculture, industry and services. In the third quarter, agricultural sector growth was 1.74 percent, and service sector growth was 3.52 percent. The industrial sector showed the weakest performance, with growth dropping to a negative 0.28 percent. In contrast, growth in this sector was 6.82 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year, which was the highest among the three sectors.
