The Ministry of Law has issued a new ordinance amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO), setting a maximum election expenditure of BDT 10 per voter for parliamentary candidates. The ordinance was gazetted on Monday (November 3).
The update introduces several changes related to political parties and campaign spending. Parties must now publish detailed records of all donations on their official websites, a move aimed at increasing transparency.
Under the revised RPO, Section 44 establishes the per-voter spending limit. Section 13 raises the nomination deposit from BDT 20,000 to BDT 50,000. Additional minor amendments were made to Sections 74, 81, 87, and 89.
Section 90 introduces new provisions on party registration, acceptance of financial donations, and the suspension of a party’s electoral symbol if its registration is revoked. These measures are part of broader efforts to regulate campaign finance and ensure fair and transparent elections ahead of the 13th parliamentary polls scheduled for February 2026.
