Nine fishermen were rescued alive along with their engine-disabled fishing trawler from the deep sea near Saint Martin's Island by the Bangladesh Coast Guard.
The information was confirmed on Tuesday (17 February) afternoon by Lt Commander Siam-ul-Haq, media officer of the Coast Guard.
According to the Coast Guard, the engine of a fishing trawler malfunctioned on Monday while it was operating in deep waters approximately 10 nautical miles off St Martin’s Island. As a result, the trawler lost control and began drifting at sea, leaving the fishermen on board in a vulnerable situation.
The matter was later reported to the Coast Guard’s emergency service number, prompting an immediate rescue operation.
Coast Guard ship BNS Joy Bangla reached the scene and conducted a special rescue mission. During the operation, all nine fishermen, along with the disabled trawler, were rescued alive.
After the rescue, the fishermen were provided with necessary food and primary medical assistance. They were subsequently handed over, along with the trawler, to the vessel’s owner.
The Coast Guard stated that its patrol and rescue operations would continue regularly to address any emergencies along the maritime route.
