A tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal President Hasanul Haque Inu to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on Tuesday after finding him guilty of crimes against humanity in a case arising from the July 2024 mass uprising.
The three-judge International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, convicted Inu on three of eight charges brought against him. The charges stemmed from a shooting incident on August 5, 2024, when gunfire directed at student and civilian protesters in several locations across Kushtia city left six dead.
The tribunal imposed three concurrent 10-year rigorous imprisonment sentences, while two of the proven charges also carried BDT 100,000 fines. The sentences will run concurrently, leaving Inu with a total custodial term of 10 years and a financial penalty of BDT 200,000.
The case was filed with the tribunal in the aftermath of the Kushtia killings. Investigators launched their probe on March 25, 2025, and submitted their report on September 11 of that year. Formal charges were filed on September 25, and the tribunal framed the charges on November 2.
The trial opened formally on November 30, 2025. After the prosecution and defence presented their witnesses, closing arguments ran from April 13 to May 13 of this year. The verdict had been pending since then.
