Jahangirnagar University administration has announced its final decisions against 19 teachers and two officials accused of involvement in attacks on students during the 2024 July uprising.

The measures include compulsory retirement for one teacher, demotion and pay cuts for nine teachers and one official, and formal warnings for two teachers. The administration cleared seven teachers and one official of the allegations.

The university’s syndicate reached its decision after a nearly 13-hour meeting that began at 4 pm and concluded at 4:45 am the following morning, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan told reporters. The sanctions follow a probe by a committee formed on March 17, 2025.

Mehedi Iqbal, an associate professor in the geography and environment department, was sent into compulsory retirement — the most severe penalty handed down.

Nine other faculty members and one official received pay cuts to a lower grade, the vice-chancellor said. They are: Professor Israfil Ahmed Rangan (drama and dramatics), Professor Alamgir Kabir (statistics), Associate Professor ASM Firoz Ul Hasan and Professor Bashir Ahmed (government and politics), Professor Mohammad Tajuddin Sikdar (public health and informatics), Professor Mohammed Mostafa Feeroz (zoology), and Lecturer Kanon Kumar Sen (accounting and information systems). Several of them were also barred from administrative duties for five years and will be allowed to apply for promotion after two years subject to conditions.

Assistant Professor Mahibur Rauf Shaibal of the drama and dramatics department was demoted to lecturer, while Deputy Registrar Nahidur Rahman Khan was downgraded to assistant registrar. Both may seek promotion after two years under stipulated conditions.

Two others — Associate Professor Hosne Ara (history) and Professor AA Mamun (physics) — received warnings. Professor Mamun was additionally declared ineligible for administrative posts for five years.

Eight people were exonerated. They are: Assistant Professor Palash Saha (IBA-JU), Professor Shafi Mohammad Tareq (environmental sciences), Professor Jahirul Islam Khandker (physics), Professor Muhammad Sayadur Rahman and Associate Professor Manir Uddin Sikder (public administration), Professor Mohammad Jahangir Alam (economics), Professor Mohammad Anowar Khasru Parvez (microbiology), and Assistant Registrar Rajib Chakraborty.

“These decisions were taken after lengthy discussion and scrutiny based on the investigation committee’s report,” the vice-chancellor said. “The syndicate gave utmost importance to ensuring no innocent person was punished and no offender escaped.”

The vice-chancellor said the initial fact-finding report had led the syndicate to form a structure committee, which charged 19 teachers and two officers. The syndicate’s decision followed a review of that committee’s recommendations.

Ahsan added that the investigation report also documented the roles of the then vice-chancellor, pro-vice-chancellor (administration) and treasurer. No structure committee had previously been formed against them. The syndicate has now decided unanimously to set up three separate structure committees to examine their conduct.
