Army sets example building houses for flood victims

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today (April 30) said the Bangladesh Army has set an emblem by building houses for flood victims while maintaining standards and transparency.

"Bangladesh Army constructed 300 houses for flood victims in a difficult condition under a special housing project in flood-hit Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla, and Chattogram districts," he said.

The chief adviser virtually addressed the house handover function in the four districts from his Office here.

Noting that the quality of the houses and proper allocation utilization were ensured in the project implemented by the Bangladesh Army, the chief adviser said the project was done with half of the 50 crore budget allocated for building houses.

Expressing his gratitude to the army and local administrations for constructing the houses, Prof Yunus hoped that the Bangladesh Army would also stand by the country's people in any disaster in the future.

He highlighted the aftermath of the devastating flood that hit the country's southeastern region in August-September last year. The flood affected the people of the four districts, and many lost their houses.

The chief adviser said it was the government's responsibility to stand by the flood-affected people, which is why it took the special housing construction project immediately after the flood.

He said those who lost their houses in the flood have now found a dwelling where they can live with their family members.

Prof Yunus urged the beneficiaries to ensure the education of their children so that they can be good human beings and entrepreneurs.

300 houses were distributed among the flood victims in the four districts. On behalf of the chief adviser, the deputy commissioners of the four districts handed over the keys to the houses among them.

110 houses were distributed among the beneficiaries in Feni, while 90 houses were distributed in Noakhali, 70 houses were distributed in Cumilla, and 30 houses were distributed in Chattogram.

Disaster Management and Relief Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, and Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman also spoke at the function at the CAO's end.

Senior civil and military officials were present.
