NBR launches online system for income tax return extensions

The revenue authority has made online filing mandatory for most individual taxpayers in the current tax year, with a few exceptions.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has launched an online facility allowing individual taxpayers to apply for an extension to file their income tax returns for the 2025–2026 tax year.

According to an NBR press release issued on Monday, the deadline for individual taxpayers to file returns has been set at March 31.

The revenue authority has made online filing mandatory for most individual taxpayers in the current tax year, with a few exceptions.

According to NBR data, nearly five million individual taxpayers have registered in its e-Return system, while about 4.1 million have filed returns so far.

However, taxpayers who apply before the deadline may receive an extension of up to 90 days, subject to approval by the relevant tax commissioner.

To streamline the process, the NBR introduced the facility through its e-Return system. Taxpayers can log in and apply for an extension using the “Time Extension” option.

Based on the application, the tax commissioner of the relevant tax zone will approve or reject the request through the system.

If approved, taxpayers may file their returns within the extended period without paying any penalty or additional tax.

The NBR said taxpayers must be registered in the e-Return system and submit their applications before March 31, 2026 to use the online facility.

Taxpayers for whom online filing is not mandatory may apply for an extension either through the system or by submitting a written application to the relevant tax circle.

The revenue authority urged all individual taxpayers to file returns for the 2025–2026 tax year through the e-Return system by March 31, 2026, or within any extension approved by the tax commissioner.
