A Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member was injured in a landmine explosion near the Ghumdhum border area of Tumbru Union in Naikhongchhari Upazila, Bandarban, on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 11:30 am near the 41st border pillar in the Peyarabunia area.
Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of the 34th BGB Battalion, said the injured, Naik Akhtar Hossain, was on duty at the Rezu Amtali BOP under the 34th Battalion. The blast severed his right ankle and caused severe injuries to his left leg.
The BGB reported that the team was patrolling a proposed temporary BOP within Bangladeshi territory when the landmine detonated. Akhtar Hossain was immediately rescued and admitted to Ramu Military Hospital, where he remains under treatment.
Multiple sources indicate that Myanmar has planted numerous landmines in the no-man’s land along the Naikhongchhari border. Similar incidents have previously injured both local residents and livestock inside Bangladesh. Authorities continue to caution personnel and residents in the border area.
