More than two-thirds of candidates contesting six parliamentary seats in southern Bangladesh’s Khulna lost their security deposits, unofficial data released by returning officers show.
Thirty-eight candidates contested the six constituencies in Khulna in the thirteenth national election. Of those, 26 failed to secure one-eighth of votes cast, the threshold required under Bangladesh Election Commission rules to retain a deposit.
Winners in all six seats were candidates from Bangladesh Nationalist Party or Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. The BNP took four seats and Jamaat two.
In Khulna-1, BNP’s Amir Ezaz Khan won. Ten other candidates in the constituency, including nominees from Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jatiyo Party and Communist Party of Bangladesh, lost their deposits.
Jamaat’s Sheikh Jahangir Hossain Helal won Khulna-2, where the Islami Andolan candidate lost his deposit.
BNP’s Rakibul Islam Bakul took Khulna-3. Eight candidates from Islami Andolan, Jatiyo Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal and Nationalist Democratic Movement lost their deposits there.
SK Azizul Baree Helal of the BNP won Khulna-4. Deposits of the Islami Andolan candidate and an independent were forfeited.
BNP’s Ali Asghar Lobby won Khulna-5, where nominees from Jatiyo Party and the CPB failed to secure the required vote share.
Jamaat’s Abul Kalam Azad won Khulna-6. Three candidates, from the CPB, Islami Andolan and Jatiyo Party, lost their deposits.
Polling passed peacefully across all six seats, election officials said. No major complaints were recorded.
