Suspect identified, but German tourist’s belongings remain missing

Railway police, SRB and Natore district police are working together to arrest the suspect and recover the laptop and camera.

Police have identified a suspect in the theft of a German tourist’s laptop and camera at Natore railway station, but have not recovered the items more than 24 hours after they went missing.

CCTV footage from the station showed the man leaving with the bag on the Ekota Express at about 4 pm on Wednesday after removing the vest he was wearing.

Kirill Lander-Weber, the German tourist, arrived at Natore station on the Lalmoni Express from Bogura at about 3 pm on Wednesday. A young man in a vest was seen with him, railway security worker Selim Hossain said. Weber left his bag with the man at the station’s VIP rest room while he went to withdraw money, and returned to find both the man and the bag gone.

Weber reported the theft at Natore Sadar police station and filed a complaint that night. Monsur Rahman, the station’s officer-in-charge, said that because the incident occurred in the railway area, Weber was sent to the railway police in Rajshahi, though Natore police are also investigating.

The German tourist is currently in the custody of railway police in Rajshahi. Railway police, SRB and Natore district police are working jointly to recover the items.

Iftekhayer Alam, additional superintendent of police in Natore, said one person had been identified from the CCTV footage and that police were trying to arrest him with the help of information technology. The officer said he expected the items to be recovered soon.
