A fire tore through two carriages of the Dhaka-bound Chattala Express near Faujdarhat on the Chattogram–Dhaka line early on Thursday, suspending services before the train resumed with replacement coaches.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control by about 6:45 am, roughly 30 minutes after it broke out at 6:15 am, said Ehshan Ali, assistant officer at Kumira fire station in Sitakunda. Crews took another hour to extinguish it completely.
Railway authorities detached the unaffected carriages to stop the fire spreading. The power car and an air-conditioned coach were gutted.
Officials cut the front portion of the 18‑carriage train, which included the power car, and moved it to the adjacent Kumira station. The burnt carriages and five intact coaches later went to the Pahartali shed. The transport division added a new power car and AC coach; the train was scheduled to depart for Dhaka by 11 am.
The fire temporarily halted rail services from Chattogram towards Sylhet and Dhaka. Operators resumed normal operations once crews contained the blaze, despite the double‑track line.
Anisur Rahman, divisional transport officer for the eastern region, said the train stopped quickly after the fire began and fire crews arrived swiftly. “Apart from the two carriages, the others did not catch fire,” he said.
Railway officials said the fire originated in the power car, which houses the generator. They could not immediately determine the cause.
The eastern rail division has formed a committee led by the divisional transport officer to investigate. Authorities have asked the panel to submit its report within next few days.
