Jamaat-e-Islami will contest the upcoming national parliamentary elections independently, party chief Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said on Wednesday (November 5). He, however, signaled plans for a broader coalition of like-minded parties. Speaking at Osmani International Airport, the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer emphasized that the alliance would include not just Islamic parties but also patriotic and development-oriented groups.
“We aim to build the nation with everyone who is committed to progress,” Rahman said. He added that the Awami League will not participate in the upcoming polls. “There is no space for Awami League in the next election,” he said.
Dr. Rahman also stressed the importance of a national referendum before the vote. “Our position on the referendum is clear. Without it, on what basis can the election take place? We want a referendum first and that the July Charter finds legal clarity,” he said.
On his recent overseas visit, Dr. Rahman said he met Bangladeshi expatriates who expressed strong support and high expectations for the country’s development. “Their warmth and love have moved me. They want to contribute to nation-building and seek only respect in return. Despite their immense contributions, we have yet to show them the proper recognition,” he added.
This visit marked Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s first trip to Sylhet after being elected for a third term as Jamaat’s Ameer.
