Coast Guard seizes illegal fishing nets worth BDT 6 billion in Munshiganj

No arrests were made during the overnight raid, which targeted multiple warehouses and factories producing banned current nets.

The Bangladesh Coast Guard and the District Fisheries Department have seized banned current nets worth around BDT 6.26 billion during a joint operation in Munshiganj.

Lieutenant Rakibul Islam, station commander of Coast Guard Pagla, confirmed the information on Saturday (October 25).

Acting on a tip-off, the joint team carried out raids from late Friday night until 8 am Saturday across several areas, including Dingavanga in Muktarpur. The operation targeted six warehouses and six illegal net-manufacturing factories.

Authorities recovered approximately 179 million meters of prohibited current nets, valued at BDT 6.26 billion, according to the Coast Guard.

Lieutenant Rakibul Islam said the drive was part of ongoing efforts to protect the country’s fish resources, prevent the catching of jhatka (hilsa fry), and stop the production and use of illegal nets. Legal proceedings have been initiated over the seized materials.

However, no individuals involved in the illegal production were arrested during the operation, he added.
