Bangladesh Army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel have recovered more than fifty landmine pressure plates from a border area adjacent to Myanmar in Teknaf Upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
The pressure plates were recovered during a joint operation conducted on Tuesday (January 20) morning in the Ulubonia border area of Whykong Union in Teknaf.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of BGB Battalion 64 stationed in Ukhiya, said several components resembling landmine pressure plates had been recovered from the border area. “No explosives have been found in them at the preliminary stage. However, given the sensitivity of the matter, the recovered items are being examined by experts,” he said.
Sources said that from morning until noon, Army and BGB personnel carried out operations at the site and recovered an estimated 50 to 60 landmine pressure plates. The recovered components were later taken to the Whykong BGB outpost.
According to a reliable BGB source, a landmine generally consists of four main components. Among them, the front part, or pressure plate, was recovered during the operation. Such plates are usually placed on or slightly beneath the ground surface and are designed to activate the mine when pressure is applied.
Following the recovery, security measures in the border area have been further tightened, the authorities said.
